During my first roughneck gig in the TX gulf coast, I was told to never have a coffee before a big shift in the water. I thought that would not make any sense because I need the energy, boy was I wrong!

One piece of advice I received was, “Just code harder and it will all work out.” It’s a classic example of ignoring the importance of planning and understanding the problem. Simply working harder doesn’t replace the need for thorough problem-solving and clear design. It’s crucial to balance effort with strategy.

Just a pessimistic outlook or attitude. If there is something I have a desire or passion for, I don’t like to hear anything negative. It’s like playing a game with a ball and someone with a knife wants to grab the ball and jag the knife and pop it. Don’t bust my bubble.

That’s such a good example of misguided advice! ‘Just code harder’ really misses the mark when it comes to effective problem-solving. Working harder is important, but without a solid plan and a clear understanding of the problem, you’re just spinning your wheels. It’s like trying to dig your way out of a hole without a ladder—more effort won’t necessarily get you out. Balancing hard work with thoughtful strategy and planning is key to achieving the best outcomes. Thanks for sharing this!

I completely understand where you’re coming from. Negative attitudes can be incredibly discouraging, especially when you’re passionate about something. It’s like having someone try to deflate your excitement and motivation—definitely not the kind of energy you need when you’re pursuing your goals. Constructive feedback is one thing, but outright pessimism can really drag you down. Thanks for sharing this—it’s a great reminder to protect our enthusiasm from those who might not see the possibilities we do!
